DAS Solutions for Mixed-Use Buildings

Distributed Antenna Systems Improve Cellular Signal in Mixed-Use Buildings

People love their phones. And they expect to have Wifi coverage just about anywhere they go-- at any time. So mixed-use buildings --  like restaurants, office buildings, stores, and apartments -- can't afford to have spotty coverage. Otherwise, they'll have a difficult time finding tenants.

What Causes Poor Cell Reception?

It's no surprise that cell signals are strongest outdoors. With fewer obstacles to get in the way, signals can travel straight from a cell tower to devices.

Unfortunately, this isn't the case for mixed-use buildings, especially large ones. Since more people are typically in larger buildings, there are more devices competing for a spot on the network.

Not only that, but cell signals are usually weaker in larger buildings because signals have to pass through more floors, ceilings, and walls. The signal gets weaker with every encounter.

And while it's true that people inside larger buildings might not spend a lot of time in smaller spaces like closets, storerooms, vaults, or stairwells, having coverage in these areas is critical. People do go to these spaces during emergencies. So it's critical that they can access the network to call for help or for first responders to receive a signal.

How To Fix Poor Indoor Cell Signals

A Distributed Antenna System (DAS) is the key to making sure a mixed-use building has a strong, reliable signal throughout the entire building. A DAS is a network of antennas that amplifies signal strength throughout a building.

A DAS amplifies existing cell signals and goes around physical obstacles that keep the signal from reaching its entire intended coverage area. It's best to position the antennas outside a building to capture the signal and to position the antenna so that it’s pointed in the direction that needs coverage.

Which Distributed Antenna System Is Best For You?

There are four types of distributed antenna systems. Each has its own advantages, and some are easier to install and maintain than others. Deployment and maintenance are only two factors to consider when determining which DAS is right for you. The one you need depends on a number of factors, such as:

  • Your budget

  • The coverage you need

  • The capacity you need
